When comparing bats, look at willow type and grade, bat weight, handle shape and the size of the sweet spot. English willow bats give more ping and need knocking in before use; Kashmir willow bats are tougher and cost less. If you are moving up from tape ball, a mid-range bat is a good first step. Club-level hard ball bats start around Rs 10,000–25,000. Good English willow bats for regular match players usually cost Rs 30,000–70,000, and top player-grade bats go above Rs 100,000.
English willow or Kashmir willow?
English willow is lighter, with more ping and power, and suits regular match players. Kashmir willow is heavier and tougher, and better value for beginners and juniors.
Does a new bat need knocking in?
Yes. Most English willow bats need 4–6 hours of knocking in with a bat mallet before facing a new hard ball, to harden the face and prevent cracks.
